Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in den Meta-Elementen konnten so irrelevante Seiten bei spezifischen Ausschau halten listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller vielfältige Eigenschaften innert des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu beeinflussen, dass die Seite überlegen in den Serps gefunden wird.[3] Da die zeitigen Suchmaschinen sehr auf Aspekte angewiesen waren, die nur in den Taschen der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr unsicher für Schindluder und Manipulationen im Ranking. Um vorteilhaftere und relevantere Vergleichsergebnisse in Resultaten zu erhalten, musste ich sich die Anbieter der Suchmaschinen im Internet an diese Umständen adaptieren. Weil der Erfolg einer Recherche davon abhängig ist, besondere Ergebnisse der Suchmaschine zu den inszenierten Keywords anzuzeigen, vermochten untaugliche Urteile zur Folge haben, dass sich die Benützer nach sonstigen Varianten bei dem Suche im Web umblicken. Die Lösung der Suchmaschinen im Netz vorrat in komplexeren Algorithmen für das Rang, die Gesichtspunkte beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur schwierig kontrollierbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin generierten mit „Backrub“ – dem Urahn von Die Suchmaschine – eine Search Engine, die auf einem mathematischen KI basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Internetseiten gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus einfluss besitzen ließ.
