16-year-old arrested; deliberate taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass college shooting that might have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive College, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department stated in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive system materials and threatening to commit a criminal offense which is able to lead to loss of life or nice bodily injury.

Police stated they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a pupil at Berkeley High Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic items that could be used to create further weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty safety stays a excessive priority for the department," police mentioned in a press release. 

Particulars on whom the teen was attempting to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case stays underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the school's community that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon elements, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing danger to its schools. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our standard apply, maintained close contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we have been assured that this individual didn't pose an instantaneous threat to the Berkeley Excessive College neighborhood."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary motion towards the student.
