16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass faculty shooting that could have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department mentioned in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive gadget materials and threatening to commit a crime which will lead to dying or nice bodily damage.

Police stated they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital objects that could possibly be used to create additional weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"School security remains a high precedence for the department," police stated in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teen was attempting to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case stays beneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the college's group that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our commonplace follow, maintained close contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley High College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we have been assured that this individual did not pose a direct menace to the Berkeley High Faculty neighborhood."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action towards the student. 

In addition, a town corridor assembly titled: 'How you can Discuss to Children About School Violence' offered by Alameda County Workplace of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
