Father or mother with concealed weapon unintentionally shoots self while at Arlington ISD school, police say

Arlington police stated Duff Elementary Faculty was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a dad or mum with a concealed weapon had his gun unintentionally go off, hitting the parent in the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police said Duff Elementary School was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a parent with a concealed weapon had his gun accidentally go off, hitting the dad or mum within the leg.

The college had early release and college students had been released on the planned time of 12:10 p.m.

In accordance with police, the guardian, identified as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and unintentionally shot himself. His injury was not critical.

The varsity district stated White was contained in the building, near the lobby space, and never within the hallway near college students when the gun went off.

Police and school officers said there was no menace made and the guardian didn't have "malicious intent."

No students or staff were injured. The father or mother was taken to an space hospital after being shot within the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones said after White was released from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with illegal carrying of a weapon in prohibited locations and discharge of a firearm in certain municipalities.

Within the two days since the Uvalde mass school capturing, there have been 5 instances in North Texas related to guns brought to varsities or threats made.

Arlington dad and mom said their minds instantly thought of the worst after they have been notified.

No mum or dad ever needs there to be a purpose for them to get a text message saying their child's college is on lockdown.

However since this week's lethal shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they cannot assist but suppose the worst after they do.

"After I acquired the textual content message, I was like, ‘Oh my God, something is going to happen.’ I was shocked," guardian Karima Rasheed said.

Whereas most occasions, lockdowns are solely drills college students have to take part in, Rasheed's son, Rami, mentioned that understanding what happened earlier this week made this lockdown different. 

"I started seeing my classmates starting to cry and our instructor obtained a notification on their phone saying someone was in the constructing," he mentioned.

Weapons aren't allowed on school property, and parents FOX 4 spoke with mentioned even when it was a mistake, the timing is just terrible.

"What are we going to do? They should go to highschool, and obviously, statistically, it is unlikely to happen, but you never wish to be the one statistic. What if it's your children?" Matthew Mitchell said.

Mitchell lives throughout the road from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to a different Arlington school. 

"I’m terrified, completely terrified. I’ve received twin six-year-olds that go to a different Arlington college and each time I hear there is a lockdown or a school capturing, my heart jumps into my throat," he stated.

Rasheed mentioned Thursday was the graduation day for sixth grade students at Duff Elementary.

While driving her son to highschool within the morning, she had a talk with him about Uvalde and what to do if something ever happened at his school.

"If one thing happened, you’ve acquired to run anywhere that’s protected and hide," she instructed her child.

While some say the incident in Uvalde is just too contemporary to speak politics, Mitchell mentioned one thing must be accomplished now. 

"They wish to talk about it, they need to campaign on it, they want to fundraiser on it, but they don’t want to actually cross any laws and do anything," he added.
