Don’t let people off if they steal meals in desperation, minister tells police | Police

The policing minister, Kit Malthouse, has disputed the suggestion of the chief inspector of constabulary, Andy Cooke, that the cost of living crisis will trigger a rise in crime, branding it “old style” considering.

As inflation hit a 40-year excessive of 9%, Cooke stated on Wednesday that officers should use their “discretion” when deciding whether to prosecute people who steal to be able to eat.

Malthouse has advised officers to not let shoplifters off if they are stealing food out of desperation during the price of dwelling disaster.

He later informed LBC, ministers would ensure police don't flip a blind eye to shoplifters stealing food.

“In truth I wrote to chief constables only a 12 months or so in the past saying they shouldn't be ignoring those seemingly small crimes,” he stated.

Earlier, the minister advised Instances Radio: “The broad rule is that justice should be blind and I hope and believe that is the precept that sits behind not just the police but the operation of the courts as effectively.

“I've to challenge this connection between poverty and crime. What we’ve found prior to now, and where there is now rising proof, is that truly crime is a contributor to poverty. That if you happen to take away the violence and the crime from individuals’s lives they typically prosper more than they in any other case would.”

Cooke had earlier stated: “The impression of poverty, and the impact of lack of opportunity for individuals, does lead to a rise in crime. There’s no two methods about that.”

When requested how policing could keep away from being seen as the arm of an uncaring state, he mentioned forces across England and Wales were skilled in dealing with the tensions and dynamics of their communities.
